Inspect older homes for safety, says cable leader

In the absence of any electrical safety check in the Home Information Packs set to be launched in June, leading UK cables manufacturer AEI Cables is calling for all homes more than 25 years old to be inspected. As part of the HIP, the Home Condition Report is designed to be an objective assessment on the condition of the property that can be relied upon by buyers, sellers and mortgage lenders. However, it will not include an electrical safety inspection. Derek Mansfield, managing director of AEI Cables, said; “Safety is a key priority for any home and we are disappointed that electrical safety is not a consideration in the Home Condition Report. “However, another option of dealing with electrical systems is to put something into place where any houses which are more than 25 years old are inspected and validated as being in a safe condition. “Electrical wiring in homes more than 25 years old are subject to degradation and can be rendered unsafe if left unch... Cables head speaks out at Paris

The Chief Executive of the British Approvals Service for Cables (BASEC) is one of the key speakers at a major worldwide conference for the wire and cable industry to be held in Paris in June. Dr Jeremy Hodge, Chief Executive of BASEC, will be speaking on certification in the cable market and the marketing benefits of  product approval. The conference programme, from 10-12 June, is concentrating on the theme of Creating Value and Controlling Risk in the wire and cable industry. The first day will focus on creating value in the cables business and materials management in a volatile price environment. This will be followed by a second day of parallel sessions on power cable, OEM cable and will incorporate the KMI Fibre-optics Conference. Dr Hodge said: "This is an opportunity to exchange the very latest news and information in the industry and we want to ensure that BASEC is helping to shape future thinking." Cables Harmony Welcomed

The British Approvals Service for Cables (BASEC) welcomes the new Euroclassification of cables for fire being implemented over the next few years.However, BASEC Chief Executive Dr Jeremy Hodge also warns end users against making assumptions about cable performance based on this new classification. He said: "Just because a cable has this new classification does not necessarily mean it will conform to the commonly applied cable standards and specifications. The cable will only be recognized as having been subject to one particular fire test for building construction applications, upon which the classification is based. Sellers of cable should not use phrases such as "CPD approved", as these are misleading." The test method for this European-wide classification is still not finalised and published.
