The Van comes of Age
The modern van is a high specification vehicle employing many of the latest advances in automotive design, technology and construction. In this article I would like to provide an insight into what light commercial vehicle manufacturers can offer electrical contractors, whether they are self-employed with just one van or running a large fleet. Power and performance Understandably, the first place the customer will look when buying a new van is under the bonnet. Today there is a wide-ranging selection of powerful and economical engines available, developed specifically for light commercial vehicles. Even the smaller compact vans now have engines with impressive power outputs while still being fuel-efficient. Although vans are still available with petrol engines, it is the four or five cylinder diesel engine that drives most modern vans. Boxer punches harder
Since its introduction in October 2006 the Peugeot Boxer has been well accepted and over 1292 vehicles have been sold. To further strengthen the line-up a new "heavy duty" range of three panel vans and one chassis cab has been introduced. The new "heavy duty" range will be known as the "4" series and will provide class-leading maximum axle weights of 2,100 kg for the front axle and 2,400 kg for the rear axle. Interior load space also increases to a maximum of 15 m3 and two HDi diesel engine options will be available: a 2.2 litre 120 bhp (HDi 120) and a 3.0 litre 157 bhp (HDi 157) both fitted with a manual six-speed gearbox. Introduced alongside these new models, the Boxer range is now available with an optional pneumatic rear suspension costing £990 excluding VAT. New Corsavan named ‘Car-Derived Van of the Year’
It may only have been on sale for a short while, but already New Corsavan has picked up some prized silverware.The newest addition to Vauxhall’s multi-award winning van range was named ‘Car-Derived Van of the Year’ at the prestigious Professional Van and Light Truck awards, held at the CV Show in Birmingham. Tim Campbell, PV< Magazine’s Managing Director said: ‘This van is without a doubt the best in its sector. Citroen Dispatch wins award
The exciting new Citroën Dispatch has been crowned Professional Van & Light Truck’s Compact Van (4.1 – 5.0cu.m) of the Year in a prestigious awards ceremony held at the Commercial Vehicle Show (NEC, April 24-26). The Citroën Dispatch beat off all the competition in a hotly contested sector to win the PV< award, which is recognised for its stringent criteria and the quality of its judging panel, which includes members from across the commercial vehicle spectrum including both small and large fleet operators. VW scoops awards
The Volkswagen Caddy was awarded the best small van honour and the Crafter won the hard fought best large panel van title at the prestigious Professional Van and Light Truck Awards, held in Birmingham recently. The Caddy was singled out for particular praise, commended by the judges as it scored an emphatic win. John Fife, Editor of Professional Van & Light Truck Magazine said: ‘The new Caddy introduced new levels of driver and passenger comfort to the small van market. The introduction of the DSG gearbox to the range highlights Volkswagen’s commitment to commercial vehicles. The cut glass trophy was presented to Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ head of marketing, Ralf Schueler.
