Eco-village being built in Scotland

Renewable energy will feature heavily in plans to build an eco-village in Deeside. Based near Drumoak in Aberdeenshire, the eco-village will include wind, solar and geothermal power. The village, which will cost £100 million to construct, is being constructed by Chap housing. Similar methods of power generation are also being employed in the building of Ireland's first eco-village. Funding crisis leads to job losses at renewables firms

The government's grants scheme for funding renewables has taken another beating in the news of late. The system first came under fire for running out of money on the first of every month - with the Renewables Energy Association describing the grants scheme a 'farce'. Now the Guardian reports that firms are laying off staff because the government has shut its grant scheme altogether. This has meant that no grants have been released to householders since March 1, leading to accusations that it has made a mockery of the government's green credentials. "It's a complete nightmare. I have had to lay four people off and have not had a single order in seven weeks," said Sean Cavendish, head of the Portsmouth-based solar company Sunpowered. "This stop-start is ridiculous and is frustrating for the whole industry." "We were getting 20-25 inquiries a week for our systems. Now we are down to three or four.
