Emerson to provide supervisory control for wind farm network in UK
Emerson Process Management announced that it has been awarded a contract by npower renewables, one of the UK's leading renewable energy companies, to provide a wide area data gathering system to connect 19 active wind farms to their corporate headquarters, operations center, and regional centers, all in various locations within the UK. The wide-area data gathering solution will utilise Emerson's Bristol OpenEnterprise software and will provide process efficiency with access to real-time operational data and historical information for all of the turbines throughout the network. The npower operations personnel and asset management and corporate users will all be connected through this wide area network. The system will also provide cost savings by replacing labor-intensive site visits with control capability to remotely start/stop and reset turbines, and remote security features such as security cameras and access monitoring. The OpenEnterprise database is recognized as an ideal ... Full Article »

Siemens wins £183m contract
Siemens has won the order to build an offshore windfarm at Gunfleet Sands, reported to be worth £183 million. The contract was award by Danish firm DONG Energy and includes the build of 30 turbines, off the coast near Clacton-on-Sea in Essex. Gunfleet Sands will be the third British offshore project in which the largest Siemens wind turbine with a capacity of 3.6 MW is deployed. "With the latest order from the UK we are consolidating our leading position in the rapidly expanding offshore market," says Andreas Nauen, head of the PG Wind Power division. "We are particularly pleased that, following the Nysted project in Denmark and Burbo Banks in Britain, DONG has for the third time chosen Siemens as supplier for one of its offshore wind farm projects." Construction of the Gunfleet Sands offshore wind farm is scheduled to begin in 2009. Siemens is currently working on implementation of the offshore projects Lillgrund in Sweden... Full Article »

Lib Dems promise free wind turbines and solar for low-income families
The Liberal Democrats have promised free wind turbines and solar panels for low-income families. Scottish Lib Dem leader Nicol Stephen said his party had set a target of making 40,000 houses a year into energy friendly homes, with the help of grant support and tax rebates. His "Energy Friendly Homes" plan would see tax rebates of £300 and grants for households investing in micro-renewables and energy efficiency, and free energy efficiency and micro-renewables for low income households. Mr Stephen said: "By helping people install their own wind turbines, solar panels, and energy efficiency measures we will cut fuel bills and pollution."... Full Article »

Wind farm plans blocked by protesters
Protesters have won their fight to stop plans for a five-turbine windfarm on the coastline of the Solway Firth. Nuon Renewables submitted plans to build the 102m turbines at Brownrigg Hall Farm, just outside Allonby, but councillors on the Allerdale development panel rejected the plans on the grounds the windfarm would have a detrimental visual impact in the landscape and harm tourism in the area. Concerns were also raised that the narrow country lanes in the area would not support the huge trucks delivering to the site, and air traffic control safety experts raised grave concerns that the windfarm would create a shadow on their radar, making it impossible to track aeroplanes over the site.... Wind power to light up Blackpool
The first of three large turbines has been installed on the waterfront in Blackpool in a bid to use wind power to run the famous illuminations. Each £147,000 turbine will generate 15 kilowatts of power as part of a pilot scheme designed to assess the viability of wind power in the seaside resort, the Manchester Evening News has reported. Blackpool, famous for its sea breeze, already has two wind turbines operating in the town and the council hopes the new additions will enable it to tackle rising energy bills while reducing carbon emissions. "Geographically, Blackpool is in a tremendous position to harness the power of the wind and turn it to our advantage," said council spokesman Julian Kearsley. "This pilot will enable us to confirm wind speeds, turbine output and the number of turbines required," he added.... Full Article »

Wind farm gets go ahead in Northumberland
Protesters fighting a wind farm project in Northumberland have lost their battle, after a long-awaited independent study backed a massive 28-turbine development. The study, by consultants Ove Arup and commissioned by the North-East Assembly, says the site at North and South Charlton, near Alnwick, could accommodate 100 megawatts of wind energy. Two wind-farms are currently proposed in the area - one with 18 turbines at Middlemoor, by Npower Renewables, and a second of 10 turbines by RidgeWind Ltd at neighbouring Wandylaw.... Full Article »

Blaengwen Wind Farm
Force 9 Energy has announce that its application on behalf of Catamount Cymru Cyf was approved by the planning committee at Carmarthenshire County Council by a resounding 12 votes to 7. The original application for a 10-turbine wind farm near Alltwalis and Pencader had been with the Council since January 2005. The application was approved by the planning committee in August 2005, a decision which was surprisingly overturned by the now disbanded Departures Committee in November 2005. Members of this committee felt that a decision should be deferred pending the results of a study by Ove Arup commissioned by the Council to undertake a refinement of the Strategic Search Area G –Brechfa Forest. The results of this study have confirmed the suitability of the Blaengwen site. Jerry Sturman, Business Development Manager at Force 9 Energy said “We are delighted that the Arup study has confirmed Force 9 Energy’s meticulous site selection and that the application h...
