Revising standards to increase safety

Standards for installation testers have been revised in line with updated safety requirements for low-voltage networks. Fluke explains what this means for contractors.   Installation testers verify the safety of electrical installations in domestic, commercial and industrial applications. They are used to carry out tests to ensure that fixed wiring is working safely, correctly and in accordance with the international IEC 60364 standard (and its national equivalent, BS 7671 16th Edition). IEC 60364 is regularly revised to increase safety for people at home, at work and in public places. The test equipment used for verifying safety conformity must itself conform to internationally agreed standards. The relevant standard for installation testers is IEC 61557, which details the performance and safety conformance of equipment for testing and verifying protective measures in low-voltage networks. Instruments that fully comply with this standard must have the appropriate feature... Full Article »

Affordable thermography for contractors

Flir looks at the use of thermography by contractors. Greater trust in workmanship as well as increased peace-of-mind for customers is how electrical contractor, Power Technical Services, summarises the benefit of thermal imaging to its business. And the cost of the camera was easily justified as soon as it started detecting critical plant faults. "Pay back for us was well within 12 months of our purchasing the camera," explains Director Jeremy Taylor. "It’s allowing us to find faults that previously would have remained undetected until failure." Today thermal imaging is proving indispensable for the early detection of electrical faults. An infrared camera is now easily portable and year on year the technology is being developed to provide better image quality and the necessary software tools to make the job easier, quicker and more efficient. No longer just the preserve of the professional thermographer, thermal imaging is used across the electrica... Full Article »
